These images are of the impressive Etruscan monestry- Santa Maria Maggiore Church in Tuscania, near Viterbo. It has ancient roots as part of the Etruscan heartland.
Closely linked to the powerful city of Tarquinia, it was a prosperous Etruscan settlement, surrounded by necropoleis with elaborate rock-cut tombs and sarcophagi.
Dating back to the 8th century BC, Tuscania’s Etruscan origins tell a story of advanced culture, including art, religion, and architecture. It became a prominent member of the Etruscan League, a confederation of Etruscan cities that thrived during their heyday.
