This image was taken of the impressive Etruscan monestry in Tuscania, in northern Lazio near Viterbo.
It has ancient roots as part of the Etruscan heartland. Closely linked to the powerful city of Tarquinia, it was a prosperous Etruscan settlement, surrounded by necropoleis with elaborate rock-cut tombs and sarcophagi. After being absorbed into Rome as a municipium, Tuscania retained its importance and later flourished again in the Middle Ages, when churches like San Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore were built over its ancient acropolis.
This image was taken as part of an ongoing street and architectural project of the places that I visit.
